چکیده
26 Links between spatial and temporal variability of Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) 27 meteorological quantities and existing land use patterns are still poorly understood due to 28 the non-linearity of air-land interaction processes. This study describes the results of a 29 statistical analysis of meteorological observations collected by a network of ten 30 Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs). The stations were in operation in the Highveld 31 Priority Area (HPA) of the Republic of South Africa during 2008 – 2010. The analysis 32 revealed localization, enhancement and homogenization in the inter-station variability of 33 observed meteorological quantities (temperature, relative humidity and wind speed) over 34 diurnal and seasonal cycles. Enhancement of the meteorological spatial variability was 35 found on a broad range of scales from 20 to 50 km during morning hours and in the dry 36 winter season. These spatial scales are comparable to scales of observed land use 37 heterogeneity, which suggests links between atmospheric variability and land use patterns 38 through excitation of horizontal meso-scale circulations. Convective motions 39 homogenized and synchronized meteorological variability during afternoon hours in the 40 winter seasons, and during large parts of the day during the moist summer season. The 41 analysis also revealed that turbulent convection overwhelms horizontal meso-scale 42 circulations in the study area during extensive parts of the annual cycle. 43 44

Abstract Decadal changes in land use/land cover for Balachaur watershed in Nawanshahar district, Punjab, India were studied using black and white aerial photographs for March 1984 on approximately 1:20,000 scale and multidate geocoded false colour composites (FCC) of IRS-1D LISS-III on 1:50,000 scale for March 2002, September 2002, and May 2003 and interpreted visually to prepare land use/land...
متن کاملThe Investigation of Variability of Heat Island Hazard According to Land Use and Land Cover Changesin Esfahan
Abstract Urban heat island (UHI) is one of the environmental phenomenon which has made difficult environmental conditions for citizen. This study aims to evaluate the spatial and locational variability of Esfahan urban heat island according to the role of land use. Thus an area about 190.2 square kilometers (km2) in Esfahan, as the microclimate, was studied. In order to analyze the relations...
متن کاملClimate Variability Impacts on Land Use and Livelihoods in Drylands
This edited volume is devoted to the examination of the implications of the inevitable changes wrought by global change on the welfare and livelihoods of tens of millions of people who live in dryland regions. Global change is more than just climate change and the ramifications of changing trade patterns (geopolitical and economic aspects), the shift to the market economy, demographic factors (...
متن کاملSand Movement patterns in the south of Iran
Wind regime data from the Jask meteorological station from a 20-year statistical period (1985-2005) was analyzedusing the Fryberger method to investigate sand drift potential (DP) in this area. The resultant drift potential anddirectional variability of wind were calculated and illustrated. Average annual sand DP was estimated to be 460vector units (VU), and the sand flux is 51 m3/m.year. There...

The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...
